Despite Jonathan’s food allergies, we’ve always tried to continue doing traditional events around holidays if at all feasible. For Easter, this means dying Easter eggs! With Jonathan’s egg allergy, the traditional way of dipping eggs in colored water won’t work. He could break the egg, he could lick the egg (totally possible given his age), or just the general handling of an egg gives me tremendous anxiety. I needed to find a way for him to still safely participate and I found the best solution in using rice!

Using rice is the best allergy friendly and mess free way to color Easter eggs! Using a Ziploc bag, put about 1 cup of rice in each bag. Put ~5-7 drops of food coloring in each bag and shake! Repeat this for every color you want to use. We used 5 colors (pink, purple, teal, yellow and orange). Then place the hard boiled egg in the bag and shake away!! You can also transfer the eggs between bags to make multi-colored eggs. I was the only one who handled putting the eggs in and out of the bags though for allergy safety.

The kids had a great time helping me shake the rice/food coloring together. and then shaking again with the eggs. Do you have other fun allergy friendly Easter activities??
