Any food allergy parent will tell you one of the hardest parts of having a child with food allergies is telling them no. No you can’t go to the party, no you can’t eat the treat at school, no you can’t eat that, etc. It becomes hard and no parent wants to see their child hurt or sad.

Up until recently we have been able to generally steer clear of these instances for Jonathan because of his age. He’s been generally unaware of what he’s missing out on or how he’s different. However, we recently got a donut for Clara, an occasional treat for breakfast, and Jonathan was DEVASTATED he couldn’t partake. I’ve never seen him so upset about not eating a food.

As a result, I made it my mission that day to find a way to make him a donut he could eat. I thought about making him a donut out of a biscuit, a recipe you can find from a number of different sources online, but most store bought biscuits have milk. As a result I turned to my go-to solution – a vegan recipe.

I found this recipe via Loving it Vegan for Baked Vegan Donuts and they were so good! I even had all the ingredients at home already. I didn’t have a donut pan, but one quick drive-up trip to Target and we were all set.

The donuts were super easy to make and turned out delicious. I had Clara and Jonathan help me glaze (powdered sugar and soy milk) and put sprinkles on the donuts. Jonathan was so excited to try the donuts as you can see below. We saved a couple and put the rest in the freezer for the next time we have donuts.

I’m so excited we were able to find a recipe that was easy to make, tastes good and let’s Jonathan participate in this classic breakfast treat!
